Seahorses

The SEA LIFE Trust is a marine conservation charity working globally to protect seahorses from habitat destruction and overfishing for the Traditional Medicine and curio trades.

We want to put an end to the cruel and unsustainable collection of seahorses for the Traditional Medicine and curio trades as well as protecting the habitats on which they depend.

5 things you can do to help seahorses

As well as signing up to news, you can help seahorses by following our top tips below:

Don't buy products made form seahorses

  • Never buy things which contain seahorses - they can be used in souvenirs as well as traditional medicines in some cultures.

Only buy sustainably sourced seafood

  • For example, avoid king and tiger prawns as mangroves, an important seahorse habitat, are destroyed in order to farm them.

Watch where you drop anchor

  • If you sail, be careful not to set anchor in areas where you could damage seahorse habitats, for example seagrass beds.

Keep your distance

  • If you spot any seahorses while snorkelling or diving then please do not harass them. Stay at a distance and don't use your flash when taking photographs.

Don't get them as pets

  • Seahorses are sensitive creatures and difficult to keep without specialist knowledge so leave it to the experts and don't buy them for your tank at home.
